IP rating
IP stands for Ingress Protection and is an industry standard for classifying the degree of protection offered against the intrusion of solids or liquids.
Most IP ratings consist of the letters 'IP' followed by two digits.
- The first digit (0-6) indicates the level of protection against solids such as dust. So a rating of 6 means it is an enclosure that eliminates all dust - ie. is dust-proof.
- The second digit (0-8) represents the level of protection against liquids. An 8 means that the case can be continuously immersed in water over a metre in depth. A 7 means it can protect internal equipment in an immersed condition up to a metre in depth, though it is approved for this rating by testing for only 30 minutes.
If a case has an IP rating of IP67, that means that it can be considered as dust-proof and can withstand submersion in water up to 1 metre in depth for no longer than 30 minutes.
